Leap Castle Ghost Hunt Experience
Dares you spend the night in a location which visitors have claimed to being one of the most haunted castles in the world?!….
Leap Castle (pronounced “Lep”) has an incredibly haunted reputation, could this be due to it having it’s own chapel known as the Bloody Chapel, named after one of its former owners who brutally murdered his own brother ( a priest) in the adjoining chapel. It’s also reported that many people were imprisoned at the castle before being executed. There’s also reports of a ghostly creature that haunts the castle, aptly known as “it”. Whilst the castle now provides public access, this is by appointment only, so not only is Leap castle rarely visited, its rarely investigated….are you brave enough to spend the night here?…..really?

Paranormal Activity at Leap Castle
When a location such as Leap Castle can attract the likes of paranormal programs such as Ghost Adventures, TAPS and Ghost Hunters, it’s probably fair to say there’s a good reason why! Leap Castle has carved a very impressive reputation as being one of the worlds most haunted locations, the history trapped within the castles stone walls is pretty horrific!.
One of the earliest and most famous ghostly encounters is said to be that of a priest who haunts the “Bloody Chapel”. Passers-by have often reported sighting a light coming from the Chapel even when the castle lay in a state of ruin. One of the most concerning reports is of a malevolent and unpredictable spirit believed to have attached itself to the castle due to one of it’s former owners practicing in black arts. This spirit has been sighted at the stairs and is said to be sensed by the smell of a rotting corpse.
If that were not enough, it is believed that Leap Castle is haunted by up to a 40 strong group of male spirits who were poisoned at the Castle and who all met their untimely death within the castle walls.
In 1922 workmen uncovered an oubliette, a secret dungeon hidden within a corner of the Bloody Chapel. The workmen discovered a horrific scene on venturing down into the oubliette. It was there that they discovered 3 cart loads of human bones, all piled on top of one another amongst wooden spikes. It is believed that the Oubliette was where unwanted visitors were thrown down into, whilst the occupants feasted above, all dying gruesomely slow deaths from punctured lungs on the wooden spikes or through starvation.
History of Leap Castle
The Castle is believed to date back as early as the 13th Century, and evidence suggests that the castle was constructed on another ancient stone structure. The castle was partly demolished in 1516 when it was under siege, the original owners (O’Carrolls) regained possession in 1557. It is the O’Carroll brothers who turned against each other and where it is said one brother ( a priest) was fatally wounded by the other and died from this murder in the chapel now known as the Bloody Chapel.
Part of the castle was burnt down during the Irish Civil War in 1922, the castle was then purchased by an Australian Historian who completed extensive renovation up until his death in 1989. Since 1991 the castle has been privately owned by its current owner who continues the forever task of maintaining and restoring this stunning and historic location.
