Join Haunted Evenings this coming October for a ghost hunt at the once brutal Lancaster Castle. Lancaster Castle has strong historical ties to the Pendle Witches and “boasts” over 200 executions in its time as a serving prison. Ghost Hunting at Lancaster Castle will likely leave you quaking in your boots but rest assured you’ll be left wanting more!. This location is rarely investigated and with such a long  history of housing criminals and the long suffering of so many wrongly accused, it’s no wonder that Lancaster Castle is a place on most ghost hunters bucket lists!

Haunted Evenings Event LancasterYou’ll be one of just a few ghost hunters for the evening, exploring and investigating this large location from the Hanging Yard, Prison Wings and domestic areas. You will have the chance to use all the latest ghost hunting gadgets, take part in modern and more traditional ghost hunting vigils and really get a feel for what it is like to go ghost hunting at one of the UK’s premium haunted locations!.

Paranormal Activity at Lancaster Castle

With such a tragic and gruesome history, it is little wonder that Lancaster Castle has extensive reports of ghostly activity. It is believed that the staff at Lancaster Castle are so used to paranormal activity, that when visitors claim to be shoved and pushed, the tour guides are no longer surprised. The ghost of a monk has been seen at the castle, believed to have been hanged at the prison. The monk has been seen on the ground floor of the castle after dark, often with the presence of an icy chill. Whilst used as a prison in more recent times, prisoners had reported hearing a young girl, other accounts suggest that she has been seen running along the corridors of the castle.
Haunted Evenings invites you to join them on an overnight ghost hunt at this phenomenal location. Using different methods throughout the night to try and capture evidence, you will have the opportunity to join in on some unique experiments, as well as “enjoy” the unnerving feeling of wandering around a haunted castle in the dark! This location is pretty intense!

History of Lancaster Castle

Lancaster Castle’s history stretches as far back as the 11th Century where it is believed it was founded on a Roman fort. The Castle was first used as a prison in 1196 around the time records suggest, Castles like Lancaster, were rebuilt in stone. Records show that between 1402 – 1422, a large sum was spent strengthening the Castles defences, mainly to the Castles Keep and gatehouse.
In 1570 Elizabeth I retaliated by declaring Roman Catholic priests guilty of high treason and any in the vicinity were taken to Lancaster Castle for trial as were the Pendle Witches in 1612.
The Castle was used intentionally to house prisoners for short periods of time immediately before trial, however in the 18th Century, it became more common place for prisons such as Lancaster Castle to hold longer-term prisoners, which led to severe overcrowding. It was a visit from John Howard in 1776 to Lancaster Castle, who noted the condition of the prison, that instigated that jails throughout the country be separated by gender and category.
In recent times, Lancaster Castle served as a Cat C prison and a crown court from 1955 to it’s closure, due to government costs, in March 2011. It is only recently that the castle is now open to the public

Pendle Witch Trials

Whilst the famous alleged witchcraft of The Pendle Witches took place on Pendle Hill where the witches lived in surrounding villages, the most significant part of their tragic story occurs at Lancaster Castle. It was at Lancaster Castle where five of the unfortunate people were imprisoned, found guilty and subsequently sentenced to suffer death. “Old Demdike” died before execution from the poor condition within the prison cell in which she was kept.  One of just a few miserable and dark tales of execution at Lancaster Castle. The Pendle Witch trials took place between 17th-19th August 1612, the prisoners were not allowed to have defence counsel plead for them nor could they call upon any witnesses. At the end of the three day trial, a total of 10 people were found guilty of witchcraft, sentenced to death and hanged on the moor above the town.

Event Review

22.06.18

We’re on the road again! To finish off this half of what’s been an epic year so far, we started our last weekends investigation in June by stopping off at Lancaster Castle as part of a road trip (yes this really is a favourite of ours!).
Guests investigating the A-Wing, a Victorian Jail used up until 2011 with its numerous cells to break off into, soon discovered that there sure are some haunted hotspots, with the shower block being the place once again to put people that little more on edge! Muffled voices were detected and a character called William was picked up on by Psychometrist Stu.
Over in the C-Wing, equipment was used to detect activity, with the end cell providing guests with an experience through EMF devices and voice recorders.
Over in the Governors rooms, an older part of the castle, dowsing rods picked up a strong energy spot and a spirit named Christopher came through who was able to push 3 guests on command.
A very interesting investigation made easy with such wonderful guests who put some great energy into the vigils, proving once again that Lancaster Castle is indeed haunted!

26.01.18 + 27.01.18

Haunted Evenings ended January with two back to back events up at Lancaster Castle, a top favourite location of ours!
Both nights produced some phenomenal moments, with energy from spirit coming forward in all areas, from strong EMF spikes on command up in the A wing, to voices captured in the medieval cells at the base of the Norman Keep. One of the many highlights was an amazing vigil in cell 8 in the C-Wing, a male presence named Edward came forward and caused all our EMF devices to spike in such a way we (team included) were left literally blown away! Phenomenal.
We also did our first 360 live which will be archived over at fb page Haunted Evenings 360 (Sadly 4G wasn’t so kind to us on night 2!)
Guests, you were all amazing on both nights and we thank you all for getting so involved in the various activities throughout the Evenings. A massive thank you to the teams too who yet again did Haunted Evenings proud!
