Ghost Hunt Thackray Museum
Join Haunted Evenings as we enter this former Leeds Union Workhouse, built originally as a pauper house for over 700 destitute refuges from 1861 onwards. This magnificent imposing Grade II listed Victorian building dominates the area. The history and past energies held within these walls from when it was a workhouse and later, as part of a Hospital, sets this location up as being one of the most foreboding and haunted places in the area, the perfect place to investigate!
Life in a Workhouse was deliberately tough going. Harsh working conditions, which consisted of spending long days working repetitive tasks, were rewarded with basic food and accommodation. Workhouse inmates did however at least have the advantage of access to free medical care and education, not yet readily mainstream to the struggling classes of the general population. At the turn of the century, the Workhouse had by now seen building expansion. A main block, infirmary, chapel and wards for the mentally ill were now part of the development. By World War I, The Leeds Union Workhouse was now the East Leeds War Hospital providing care for the armed services, continuing as part of a Hospital until the 1990’s, when the building was deemed unfit for purpose. In 1997, this old Victorian building took on it’s current role as the Award Winning Thackray Medical Museum, which now displays countless scenes from early Victorian slum life, eerie enough during usual visiting hours!

Event Summary / Spoiler!
If you’re into imposing Victorian buildings then you would have felt right at home with Haunted Evenings last night as we returned to the Leeds former Workhouse (opened in 1861) now known as the award winning Thackray Museum. As your jaw can’t help but drop at the sight of this grade II listed building, the grand entrance and staircase gives those that enter an instant sense of the history that is encased within its walls ….this building is quite simply a magnet for paranormal investigators!
Last night guests were certainly all up for the challenge of discovering what paranormal activity this magnificent building had to offer and were soon split down into small groups to investigate all corners of this former workhouse and hospital.
Results from the evening certainly indicate that activity was experienced in all areas with some fascinating similarities amongst the groups (unbeknownst to anyone at the time). The name Peter it seems was picked up independently by 2 groups (one via an EVP, the other sensed by a guest), cold spots (and I mean cold spots!) were felt by 3 groups during human pendulum experiments that could not be debunked and during 2 ouija board sessions, one group were contstantly being given the confusing message “6A-6A” and another group later in the evening were given “6F-6F”!! K2’s were going off in response to questions asked to spirit in the “street” area with a voice over the spirit box believed to be saying “help me” which, on analysing voice recordings, was also captured by the same group! (listen below)
On listening back to all EVP’s today it appears we are spoiled for choice! With some amazing captures, there are just too many to upload so here is a list of them all “help me”, “All of them”, “Help Nobody”, ” Peter”, “Nobody Can”, “listen (to) the heartbeat”, “help me get out of here”, “The women let me go”….listen in to “HELP NOBODY”
Thank you to all who attended last nights investigation, you gave it your all from start to finish and were a delight to investigate with.
Our return visit last night to this old Leeds Workhouse had some amazing moments of spirit validation as guests worked their way around the building taking part in a variety of vigils.
Downstairs most activity occurred during controlled trigger experiments. Initially for one group the spirit box appeared to be tapping out morse code and as the group moved area, similar taps came through via a REMPOD, believed to be a spirit called Michael who had military connections.
During an energy circle, 2 guests both experienced a strong sudden sense of feeling sick and had to step back from the vigil. Neither guest had met each other before and both felt fine once they’d stepped out of the experiment. A further human pendulum downstairs brought forward a spirit who was believed to be a 30 year old supervisor. Significant cold spots were also felt during this vigil.
For one group the Ouija board took some time to get going but eventually turned into a personal and emotional experience. For another group the ouija experiment connected with a 5 year old boy named Jonathan, date given was 1925. Crew member Neil saw a vision of Jon and his description was later confirmed by Thackray staff as being a spirit seen often by visitors. Amazing!
So many accounts of activity to report them all but one highlight was a Class A EVP which when asked “Can you tell us what this building was used for?” Replied “HOS-PI-TAL”
All in all a fascinating investigation overall so thank you to all the guests who got stuck in to the various vigils planned around this historic building.
We’ll be back again next April for a further investigation before the museum closes for a refurbishment so if you fancy joining us please head over to our website for more details!
