Ghost Hunt Ruthin Gaol
Enter Ruthin Gaol with Haunted Evenings after dark and be prepared to be split up into small vulnerable numbers as we explore this brutal historic county gaol to discover who still haunts here!. Experience a lock down in one of the former cells where many have heard doors slamming and experienced sudden cold spots or carry out traditional experiments in the debtors quarters. This location with its terrifying and unpleasant past makes for the perfect ghost hunting location….walk in the footsteps of the former inmates and feel the fear as you call out in the dark….brave enough?
History of Ruthin Gaol
In 1774 plans were passed to build a new prison jail in Ruthin to replace the former small holding gaol built in 1404. On completion, the now oldest part of the Gaol that still stands, served as the county gaol with several extensions made in the early 1800’s creating day rooms, penitentary cells and 6 solitary confinement cells. Further cells were added in 1837 and by this point, the prison could hold 58 inmates. In 1886 the impressive “Pentonville style Wing” was constructed for the exclusive use of male prisoners. Women were transferred to the older parts of the gaol which, although were smaller cells, had been remodelled for their new occupants. Male prisoners were held in their cells for 23 hours a day, with one hours exercise in the yard. Communication between inmates was further prohibted by the Victorian “silent system” which was vigoriously enforced to ensure inmates did not interact with other prisoners. Eventually the Gaol was decommissioned and inmates moved to other local Prisons from 1916. In 1903 the last execution took place at Ruthin Gaol. A miner who was found guilty of killing his wife was hanged at the prison on 17th February. His body was buried on the prison premises but later reburied in a nearby cemetary when the gaol closed.

There is a real dark atmosphere from the moment you walk into the building and a real sense of what hellish conditions many suffered, some perishing in the cramped and diseased cells.
