Paranormal Activity at Leeds Town Hall

Without doubt, the most famous “ghost” is that of Charlie Peace, a crooked and notorious character who went on to be sentenced to death at the Town Hall for burglary and for the horrific crime of double murder. It is said his spirit still haunts beneath the Town Hall in one of the the still intact cells, with remaining wooden doors and benches. Charlie was executed at Armley Prison after spending time incarcerated at Bridewell (small prison / cells area beneath Leeds Town Hall). Dare to spend time in the cells and be brave enough to call out for this brutal former prisoner?! Haunted Evenings will have access to the old Victorian cells, newer cells area, former court room, crypt and will look to end the evening visiting the magnificent Victoria Hall*

History of Leeds Town Hall

Leeds Town Hall, Leeds most magnificent landmark, was officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1858 to a crowd of approximately 500,000 people. Designed to provide accommodation for municipal departments, a courtroom, police station and a venue for concerts and civic events, it ended it’s use as a courthouse in 1993 and thus closed off the cells once used to hold prisoners awaiting trial. Today the cells are rarely visited and the Victorian cells amazingly intact – perfect for an overnight investigation!

What to expect.....

Ghost Hunt Leeds Town Hall : What to expect on the Haunted Evenings Event?

This is a unique opportunity to visit areas of Leeds Town Hall rarely visited by members of the public including the old Victorian Cells and Crypt (Spooky as!!)

Your night at Leeds Town Hall will start with a warm welcome from the Haunted Evenings Team before we take you on a short orientation tour of some of the areas you’ll be investigating with the lights off!
During the course of the evening you will be split up into smaller groups to go off and do some group vigils in the dark (plus lone vigils for those of you brave enough to go it alone!). These will be organised by the team and a staff member will be present at all times with each group.
The Haunted Evenings team uses all the latest paranormal investigation equipment as listed on the equipment page and encourage all guests to have a go at using as much of the gadgets as they wish. The team aim to conduct unique experiments with a “think outside the box” attitude, making the night at the Bradford Police Museum unique to the location, with specific trigger objects and some special twists on more traditional methods for those braver guests!.
Haunted Evenings also aim to collect EVP evidence (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) using rare equipment which works at a lower frequency and can record voices unheard by the human ear. The team will also be setting up experiments in some of the rooms in the hope of catching paranormal activity which will be re-visited before the end of the evening.

Leeds Town Hall Event Review

A mind-blowing forgotten criminal underworld lies beneath the steps of this gigantic Leeds landmark! A whole evening still wouldn’t be enough time to investigate the many disused police cells, holding cells, passage ways, Victorian prison cells and crypt that have been more or less abandoned below ground. This area alone equates to almost the size of a football pitch! . With the Grand Victoria Hall above ground and decommissioned court room too, it’s a challenge in itself to visit all areas let alone investigate! But investigate we did, with guests taking part in an array of vigils, from traditional to gadget driven experiments, group work to lone vigils, this was one very busy Haunted Evening!

COURT ROOM : Movement on the glass during the court room Ouija board vigil picked up on an unsavoury character who communicated through yes/no responses. He stood trial for murder and was held beneath the hall in one of the cells.

VICTORIA HALL : Dowsing rods and human pendulums held in the Victoria Hall produced results for all 3 groups and on 2 occasions, spirits predating the building, came through, both from the 1700’s.

OLD CELLS : In the old Victorian cells, Rempods were detecting significant changes in temperature alongside a strange moment when a coin was dropped in amongst the group which stopped everyone in their tracks! Whilst no-one claimed the 10p prize, a vent to the street above was one explanation for where the coin may have come from. It was one of those head scratching moments where we can’t quite rule out the explainable. We further asked for a response from the empty end cell and received a noise caused from falling plaster. Coincidence again maybe but sure grabbed our attention once again! We’ll edge on the side of caution with both incidences but they were memorable moments nonetheless!

EVPs : We’re still to review all the voice recordings we conducted last night but although most sounded undecipherable on the night, they did at least indicate we were not alone! We’ll update the blog with any we feel are worthy of a listen later!

HOLDING CELLS : Our locked off camera experiment showed very little signs of activity last night, k2’s triggering throughout feed number 2 that likely were caused from hidden cables, albeit not triggered initially….and it is now that we give a big shout out to guest Stuart who braved a lone vigil on camera, in what has to be the most isolated spot we could possibly find beneath the building….in amongst old holding cells, even the rest of the team didn’t know where this was!….a long walk back to base too! Thanks Stuart for giving that a go, hats off to you!

Last night the team entered new territory by investigating this amazing landmark in Leeds City Centre, unusually untouched by investigators all considering its history and original nature of the building. (Apparently it was last investigated around a year ago!).
Used mainly today for grand performances in the magnificent Victoria Hall, it’s underneath the great Hall that we spent most of our evening and for good reason! It’s here that the Leeds Town Hall has a forgotten world of police cells (new and old areas) and a decommissioned court room to spend time in, as well as the crypt area which has an eerie feel to it.
We split the location into 4 areas with a different approach to investigating each area, from traditional methods, equipment vigils and for one night only up in Leeds, added a surprise mediumship vigil with guest medium Grant Colyer
Court Room : Accessed via stone and wooden steps, guests were led up from the cells into the dock of the decommissioned court room. Here we tried our hands at a tech vigil with SLS camera and laser grid. During one session the SLS camera mapped out something above the judges chair and in another, a groan and whistle was heard. One of 2 Class A EVP’s from last night was captured here too, when at 3am and home time, spirit gave us a clear “Goodbye” on our voice recorder.
New Cells : This area we allocated for an explore vigil. Plenty of cells and corridors to spread out into. Some guests reported back an unusual session in one of the cells they locked themselves into, whilst other guests investigated the corridor and a Police Officer was picked up through questioning via our Rempods
Old Cells : the Ouija board had mixed success down here so some teams tried other traditional methods instead with all groups reporting back some activity. A prisoner was picked up here on the board who was a petty criminal named “Tomus”. For another group, medium Grant picked up on a Jailer named Chris before a personal connection came through during a pendulum.
Crypt/Victoria Hall : An unusual mist was seen by a few people down in the crypt area and during a human pendulum a judge came through. Above the crypt in the Victoria Hall, other groups took to the stage and picked up on spirit energy during traditional methods. Muffled EVP’s were picked up below the stage and another Class A EVP captured around the stage area saying “what’s that”
More time could easily have been spent in each area to get more in-depth results but with so much ground to cover, our first night at Leeds Town Hall was equally about ensuring we covered as much ground as possible to discover where the hotspots are. All areas provided some activity by the end of the night with the old cells being the most active on the night.
