Hauntings at Craig Y Nos Castle
The Castle claims to have strong paranormal phenomena, in particular the haunting of Patti, her second husband and the object of her affection, composer Rossini. Beneath the stage of Patti’s beloved theatre room has proven to be very active on previous investigations with many of our guests left startled by heavy footsteps!. The Castle was also once used as a childrens ward to those children suffering from TB. The recovery rate was extremely low and many children never left. The Top Childrens Ward is the most active room in the building and guests can investigate the room where several beds have been laid out (sleep there if you dare?!)
There are other rooms to investigate, including Patti’s bedroom, upper floor rooms and one of the most active places when we were last there was the cellars. A guest had a piece of equipment fly out of his hands!
History of Craig Y Nos Castle
Craig Y Nos Castle is actually a Victorian Gothic Country House built on parkland in the upper Swansea Valley. Built between 1841 and 1843 by Captain Rice Davies Powell, it was said that the Powell family were cursed! His youngest son passed away in 1851 from cholera, his wife and daughter died before the Captains death in 1862 and 2 years later his eldest son was killed in an accident. The estate was left to his eldest daughter who sold the property in 1876 to the Morgan Family.
In 1878 the property exchanged hands again, this time, purchased by Adelina Patti. At this time Adelina had become famous for being an opera star and it is during her ownership of the property, that the North and South wings, conservatory, clock tower and theatre were added. The Adelina Patti theatre is a grade I listed opera house at Craig Y Nos Castle, the beautiful auditorium with lavish paintings, panelled walls, stage area and sloping floors can still be enjoyed today.
In more recent years the castle has functioned as a hospitality venue and runs as a hotel. Most of the revenue generated is ploughed back into the property to help maintain and slowly restore the property. Many parts of the upper floors are abandoned and derelict. It is this that makes this location unique.

Event Review / Spoiler!
2 amazing locations were investigated as part of our “Wales Weekend”, starting with Craig Y Nos Castle on Friday night and Margam Castle on Saturday….
CRAIG Y NOS CASTLE : At Craig Y Nos Castle, activity occurred mainly down in the salt-cellar and beneath the stage area of the old theatre, interestingly both places proving active on previous visits. In vigil 1, the sound of a door banging was followed with footsteps coming down the cellar steps. Those down in the cellar at the time all expected someone to appear but no-one was there. Later, during vigil 3, also in the cellar, a stone was chucked, adding to our experiences over the years that a darker entity is lurking in that part of the premises.
At the stage area, separate groups experienced unexplainable activity with the equipment. Our movement devises triggered on command and our EMF meters surged into life, guests experienced unusual cold spots and it was believed we were in contact with children and a male entity.
Up in the old Children’s Ward, a dilapidated part of the building once used to treat children with tuberculosis, EVP’s were captured. When asking the spirits for their favourite nursery rhyme, all guests concluded the response was ring-a-ring-roses from what was picked up on the voice recorder. Spikes on the K2’s helped back up the sense of not being alone.
