Enter the unknown with Haunted Evenings as we conduct another exclusive paranormal investigation at this former Victorian factory in Central Birmingham. This well preserved coffin furniture factory, which opened in 1894 in the Old Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham, resembles a time capsule; with office paperwork, machinery and old stock placed back exactly where it was once left when the factory closed in 1998. A truly fascinating insight into an original Victorian factory, fully restored yet still with a sense of eerie abandonment!
Newman Bros. Coffin Works is now the only surviving building that remains on Fleet Street from the 1800’s. Perhaps because of this, the Coffin Works may provide familiarity to any remaining souls roaming the area? Who knows just how haunted this location is, this is a very exciting opportunity to find out! What we do know so far……

On numerous occasions, during the period after Newman Brothers’ closed and was awaiting restoration, a local passer-by would often make note of seeing the night watchman peering out from one of the many factory windows, only to be informed some while later by employees that there was never a night watchman on duty during this vacant period!
More recently, since opening as a Museum, the Museum Manager was working alone late one night in the “Shroud Room” when the telephone from inside the former 1960’s office next door started ringing. Perfectly normal? Not quite! The phone is not connected to anything other than a motion sensor on the inside office wall, designed to “set-off” the phone when tours walk into the Old Office and pass the sensor. Who or what set off the motion sensor? No-one was inside the office and needless to say, the staff member didn’t rush to pick up the phone to find out!
History of the Coffin Works
Fleet Street was once a bustling inner city residential street, with a row of terraced houses on one side and the Birmingham Canal on the other. By 1890, most of the housing was already being torn down to make way for regeneration and by 1894, the Coffin Works (a brand new build) was ready to serve it’s new owners Alfred and Edwin Newman. The Brothers were established brass founders, specialising in the production of coffin furniture and the business was later passed down to Alfred’s sons. The business thrived making brass handles and ornate coffin plaques for a century before dissolving in 1999 after failing to modernise and “falling behind the times”. Joyce Green, the last owner of the Coffin Works may have failed to keep this traditional factory operating but successfully campaigned for 10 years, until her death in 2009, to ensure the building and it’s contents were preserved. Now protected by the Birmingham Conservation Trust, anyone who enters will feel like they’ve just walked in to the Newman Brothers Factory moments after the workers have gone home for the evening!
